Joy Chua, also known as Refrain in the esports and gaming scene, is a Singaporean entrepreneur, project manager, and communications specialist operating at the intersection of esports, media, and digital marketing.
A former esports athlete, Joy has evolved into a founder and organisational builder, specialising in project management, brand strategy, and communications. Her work focuses on designing structured systems, campaigns, and ecosystems that drive both creative and commercial outcomes.
She is the Founder of Callais Esports, an organisation dedicated to lowering barriers to entry within the gaming industry through education and community development. She later became Co-Owner of NEXGA, where she contributed to the growth of national-level talent and the development of one of Southeast Asia’s early esports representative agency models.
Beyond esports, Joy is the Managing Director of TEAMO Co, a marketing and creative agency supporting brands across Southeast Asia. The agency specialises in KOL and KOC management, content marketing, and strategic communications, helping businesses navigate digital ecosystems through structured campaigns, creator partnerships, and measurable results.
Her portfolio spans gaming, technology, fintech, and corporate sectors, where she has led regional campaigns, built creator networks, and executed both online and on-ground activations.
Academically, Joy holds a BA (Hons) in Communication (First Class Honours) from Sunway University (Lancaster University), and previously graduated with Distinction in Broadcast Media from LASALLE College of the Arts. Her academic work informs her professional practice, particularly in areas such as gamification, digital communities, and media systems.
She is currently developing research interests in esports governance, grassroots ecosystems, and youth participation in Southeast Asia, with the long-term goal of contributing to academia as a lecturer and researcher.
Alongside her professional work, Joy engages in selected speaking, moderation, and educational initiatives, including workshops on marketing, media, and career pathways.
